Blast Furnace is a play with musical interludes. Set inside the heat, smoke, and sweat of US Steel’s Clairton blast furnace during the summer of 1974, the plot follows two college students who take up shovel and sledgehammer to work amongst the blue-collar crew of seasoned steelworkers. Their youthful optimism collides with the hard-edged pragmatic laborers. With humor and pathos, they bond, and a mutual respect and understanding is gained after a tragedy forces them to face the harsh realities of life together.
